Petek

Suspect #1

Medium: Graphite on Paper

This piece was my first real attempt at a self-portrait. I started it as a school project, but I soon found myself poking and prodding at every little feature long after the class had ended. Early on in the process, a classmate said it resembled a mugshot — so I leaned into that idea, dramatized the lighting, and added the height markers to emulate a real mugshot. Realistic shading is a lesson I'm always learning, but out of all the drawings I've done, this one taught me the most.

Inversion

Medium: Digital Camera

I grew up skiing at a place the locals know as 'Big Mountain,' which is where this photograph was taken. One day last year, as I was enjoying my time at the mountain, I stopped at this exact location and was mesmerized by the view. I noticed the leading lines of the mountains and clouds. I noticed the sun and the inversion it illuminated so perfectly. All I had with me at the time was my phone camera, and yet the photo it took is one of my favorites. Although this photograph may not have been taken with professional equipment, I think the composition and timing make it just as special.

Flowline

Medium: Graphite on Paper

This still life started as part of a larger drawing, which I then broke into pieces, redrawing each with more detail. This was my favorite piece because of the way the paper "flows" across, and off, the edge of the page. It's a simple drawing that turns an everyday item into art, and I think that's what makes it special.

Throw me!

Medium: Digital Camera

I’m usually not a fan of heavily edited photos, but in this case, I’m really happy with how it turned out. The blue and white halves frame each silhouette, separating the image and emphasizing the distance between the two subjects.

Proportions

Medium: Graphite on Paper

This artwork was part of a class project from last term. The name of the game was learning to scale proportions accurately. Through practice and guidance from the Professor, I felt this piece taught me much in that regard.

Aries

Medium: Digital Camera

One day, as I was walking through my parents’ backyard, I noticed two cement pillars collecting dust. They immediately reminded me of Greek architecture and mythology. Using a mirrorless camera set on a timer and a healthy dose of lighter fluid, I created this photograph. I wanted to give the image a ritualistic feel, and once I saw the results, I knew Aries was the only suitable name.
